About Us

The ODU Democrats are an organization committed to establishing a politically active, dedicated, & diverse group of students on the campus of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA and the surrounding cities. Under the past leadership of Presidents Terrell Kingwood & Justin McLawhorn and Vice President Alex Stephens, the ODU Democrats have established themselves as a respected organization not only in Hampton Roads, but in Virginia as a whole. Together with outside organizations and fellow Monarch organization, the ODU Democrats will continue their civic service by supporting campaigns with volunteers and interns. Additionally, the organization will look to coordinate with local as well as national Democratic politicians and policy drivers to bring attention to the important issues of our time, i.e. immigration reform, free & fair elections, climate change, & many other rising concerns.

During the 2012 General Election season, the ODU Democrats worked closely with the Organizing for America grassroots campaign effort to re-elect President Barack Obama, elect Former Governor Tim Kaine to the U.S. Senate, re-elect 3rd District Congressman Bobby Scott, and elect 2nd District U.S. House candidate Paul Hirschbiel. Norfolk, VA was solidly Democratic in all four races.

Previous to that election, the ODU Democrats co-sponsored a public forum for the 2nd and 3rd Congressional Districts. Old Dominion University played host to Congressmen Scott Rigell and Bobby Scott, as well as their respective opposing candidates, Paul Hirschbiel and Dean Longo. The forum served as an informational session for members of the community to learn more about their current and possible future representatives. In conjunction with fellow ODU organizations, the event was a success.
